Amidst
a maze of beautiful swamps, marshes, lakes
and waterways, Joe's Landing is located
at the southern end of Bayou Barataria where
fish spawn and feed. What makes Joe's location
unique is the influence of the Mississippi
River on this ecosystem.
|
|
Like
a bird's foot, the delta of the mighty Mississippi
juts deep into the Gulf of Mexico. With
the Continental Shelf so close to shore,
sediment-laden riverwater mixes with cold,
deep-sea currents, creating a nutrient rich
zone where both salt and freshwater fish
flourish.

The
wetlands surrounding Joe's Landing offer
one of the most diverse displays of birds
and waterfowl in North America.
|
| This
is the last landfall for birds journeying
the Mississippi Flyway to the Yucatan
Peninsula in Mexico. |
|
|
As
it can take waterfowl 12 hours to migrate
across the open waters of the Gulf of Mexico,
birds spend weeks at a time building their
energy reserves before or after the long,
non-stop flight. (While birds such as Canadian
Geese and Green Head Mallards migrate, others
such as Great Herons, Egrets, Brown Pelicans
and Bald Eagles live here year-round.) Over
the course of one day, it is inevitable
that several species will be seen either
flying overhead or fishing the banks just
a stone's throw away.
